Hiking through the Ancient Oak Forest of Mongostou

On Sunday, November 9th, we hike in the Moggostos Aesthetic Forest, one of the last remaining oak forests of the Peloponnese. A 10 km circular trail in a Natura 2000 area with autumn colors and panoramic views over Corinthia.

Moggostos is a historic coppice oak forest that has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 1977, hosting rich flora and fauna. On its trails, hiking becomes an experience that combines nature, history, and breathtaking panoramas of the mountains of the Peloponnese and Central Greece.

An easy and rewarding hike for nature lovers of all ages.

• Gentle slopes, suitable even for children
• Maximum elevation: 900 m
• Combination of forest paths, trails, and vineyard crossings
• Optional detour with unique geomorphological features
• Panoramic views of the Corinthian Gulf, Mount Helicon, and Mount Parnassos

🔶 The Trail Experience

The hike begins under the shade of oak trees, walking on a carpet of autumn leaves. Mount Ziria soon appears in the background, while the optional detour reveals a hidden spot with vertical rock formations and small caves.

As we continue, arbutus and wild strawberry trees bring vibrant colors to the trail, and midway through the hike we enjoy uninterrupted views of the Corinthian Gulf and the distant peaks of Central Greece.

🔶 Forest Biodiversity

The Moggostos forest is a natural treasure with diverse species and a mythical past.

In addition to centuries-old oaks, we encounter black and Aleppo pines, heather, kermes oaks, junipers, arbutus, and wildflowers. Ancient references mention lions in the area during the Prehistoric Era — possibly inspiring the myth of the Nemean Lion.

The day ends with a traditional meal at a local taverna.
