Hymettus – Circular Hike in the Aesthetic Forest & Drakospito
On Sunday, 15 November 2026, we explore Hymettus Aesthetic Forest on a circular hike with a visit to the Drakospito. Woodland trails, rocky slopes and views across the Athens basin create a varied route just a short distance from the city. Leave the city’s pace behind and share a Sunday morning in the mountains with Wanderlust.
🔶 Our route
Starting from Kaisariani Fire Lookout, we follow a circular route passing through Taxiarches, the Drakospito and Kalopoula before returning to our starting point.
The trails alternate between uphill and downhill sections, taking us through woodland and across more open parts of the hillside. We walk at the group’s pace, with breaks to rest, enjoy the scenery and take photographs.

🔶 The Drakospito of Hymettus
Our visit to the Drakospito, or “Dragon House”, is a highlight of the hike. Set among the rocks, this stone structure draws the eye with its large slabs, offering a different perspective on Mount Hymettus.
We pause to observe the structure up close and photograph its details, respecting the site by leaving all stones in place and avoiding climbing on the structure.

🔶 Open views and return via Kalopoula
Along the open sections of the route, views stretch across the Athens basin. Rocks and low vegetation offer a change of scenery from the woodland passages we encounter along the way.
We continue towards Kalopoula and gradually make our way back to the Fire Lookout, completing a loop that combines exercise with mountain exploration.

🔶 Who can join
This activity is suitable for people with a good level of fitness and previous hiking experience who would like to explore the trails of Hymettus with an organised group.
The uphill and downhill sections and uneven terrain require sure-footedness and confidence on mountain trails. Please consult the detailed route information in the activity details table to assess whether the hike matches your abilities.

🔶 Transport and meeting point
Participants travel to the meeting point in their own vehicles. The hike is circular, starting and finishing at the same location.
If you need transport, please indicate in the comments field of your registration that you would like to carpool. We will ask in the activity’s Viber group whether other participants can offer a lift, subject to available seats.
