Perachora – Heraion & Melagkavi Lighthouse

On Sunday 03/05/2026 we hike across the Perachora peninsula, from Vouliagmeni Lake to the Melagkavi lighthouse and the archaeological site of Heraion, following a scenic coastal route with views over the Corinthian Gulf.

🔶 What you will experience

We will explore the western side of Vouliagmeni Lake, walking along the Perachora peninsula on a route that combines sea views, history and open horizons.

Our hike begins from the northwestern edge of the lake, following an easy dirt road. We then continue along a coastal trail with uninterrupted views of the Corinthian Gulf and the peaks of Mount Helicon in the distance.

The landscape alternates between rocky coastline and small hidden coves with crystal-clear waters, creating a relaxing and enjoyable hiking experience.

At the end of the coastal trail, we reach Cape Melagkavi, where the impressive stone lighthouse stands as one of the most iconic landmarks of the area.

🔶 Landscape, History & Points of Interest

At Cape Melagkavi, we encounter one of the most impressive stone lighthouses in Greece. Built in 1897, it originally operated with oil and guided ships sailing towards the Corinth Canal. Today, it is a designated historical monument.

From this point, the archaeological site of Heraion of Perachora unfolds below, set within a naturally protected bay of exceptional beauty.

The sanctuary of Hera was established in the 8th century BC and flourished during the 6th century BC, alongside the rise of ancient Corinth. It was discovered by Humphrey Payne of the British School at Athens, who conducted the first excavations between 1930 and 1933.

Continuing the route, we leave Heraion behind and ascend a small hill where the chapel of Saint Nicholas is located, offering impressive panoramic views over the Corinthian Gulf.

The hike concludes back at Vouliagmeni Lake, a unique lagoon connected to the Corinthian Gulf through a narrow channel, forming a distinctive natural landscape.
