North Hymettus – Ridge Traverse

North Hymettus – Ridge Traverse

On Sunday, March 8th, we explore North Hymettus through a circular hiking route that combines natural landscape, history, and open horizons, welcoming spring on one of the most characteristic mountain sections of Attica.

The route begins at the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Kynigos, a location of strong natural and cultural presence, and follows well-formed trails with gradual ascent and continuous views over the Athens basin.

Along the way, we pass by the Bat Cave and head towards Korakovouni Peak (692 m), where the landscape begins to open up and the mountain character becomes more pronounced.

We then move along the ridge of North Hymettus, one of the most atmospheric and distinctive parts of the route. The spring season often offers clear visibility and an even stronger sense of open horizon across the mountain landscape.

The route culminates at Koraka Peak (728 m), where the “Great Cuckoo” landmark stands proudly and welcomes us for our main break.

From this point, the view is panoramic and impressive: to the east lies Evia Island, while to the north the mountains of Parnitha and Penteli stand out, offering a strong sense of orientation and vast open scenery.
