Mount Hymettus – Ridge Traverse

Mount Hymettus – Ridge Traverse

On Sunday, February 8th, we explore Mount Hymettus through a circular hiking route that combines natural landscape, history, and open horizons, on one of the most characteristic mountains of Attica.

The route starts from the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Kynigos, a location of strong natural and cultural presence, and follows well-formed trails with gradual ascent and continuous views over the Athens basin.

Along our hike, we pass by the Bat Cave and head towards the Korakovouni Peak (692 m), where the landscape begins to open up and the mountain character becomes more pronounced.

We then move along the ridge of Mount Hymettus, one of the most atmospheric and distinctive sections of the route. The traverse culminates at Koraka Peak (728 m), where the “Great Cuckoo” landmark dominates the scenery and welcomes us for our main break.

From this point, the view is panoramic and impressive: to the east lies Evia Island, while to the north the mountains of Parnitha and Penteli stand out, offering a strong sense of orientation and open horizon.

The return follows a different trail, passing by the Lion Cave, before leading us back to the monastery, completing a balanced and rewarding circular hiking experience.
